Each evening, Venus retrograde has been sinking lower and lower toward the horizon after sunset. Any day now, she slips into the glare of the setting Sun and disappears from the sky.
Venus is entering the underworld.
This is the last phase of the Venus cycle – the last stretch before she rises again, this time as a morning star, at the end of October.
In the underworld, Venus burns away everything that has come to a natural end.
Cultures around the world have told the story of Venus’s disappearance. In Aztec myth, Quetzalcoatl – the god identified with Venus – throws himself into a fire, and after days in the underworld, his heart rises again as the morning star.
And in one of the oldest stories ever written down, the Sumerian goddess Inanna – Venus herself – descends into the underworld. At each of its 7 gates, she has to give something up: her crown, her jewels, and her royal robe.
She arrives before the queen of the dead stripped of everything she was in the world above – naked. There, Inanna dies. Her body hangs on a hook for 3 days and 3 nights.
The surrender is complete.
This phase of Venus retrograde lasts from around October 19th (give or take a couple of days, depending on where you live on Earth) until October 23rd-24th, when Venus meets the Sun.
At the Venus cazimi on October 23rd-24th, in the heart of the Sun, Venus is reborn. And a few days later – around October 29th-30th – she returns to the world above, reappearing in the morning sky.
But before Venus gets to rise from her ashes later this month, let’s focus on the current leg of her journey.
Between October 19th and 23rd, 2026, Venus goes invisible and makes the final purge of her 19-month cycle.
During this phase, Venus also squares Pluto – the lord of the underworld himself. These 4 or 5 days are as underworldly as it gets.
So what is the underworld? And why does Venus go there willingly?
Fear Of The Dark
The underworld is Pluto’s realm – the realm of death, transformation and the unknown. And because it’s unknown – because we don’t know what actually happens down there – we naturally fear it.
This is the fear of the dark. The fear of the unknown. What we can’t see frightens us, because we have no frame of reference for it.
Sometimes we feel this fear clearly, when the threat is right in front of us.
But most of the time, the fear of the dark works in much more insidious ways. We don’t know we’re afraid. We just go for the comfortable choice. We stay in the light of the day – in the light of what we already know.
We don’t go ‘out there’. We don’t take the risk. We don’t go for the career, the adventure, the relationship that’s calling us – because there’s just too much unknown.
And with every choice like this, we do a little less, risk a little less, show a little less of ourselves. We retreat into the familiar, until one day we no longer recognize ourselves.
If we look closer, the fear of the dark is really a fear of loss. The fear that what matters to us will eventually be taken away.
Just like the leaves fall and disappear into the earth, everything that is matter – including the people we love – eventually returns to Pluto’s realm.
So we hold back. We don’t invest fully. We don’t love fully. We don’t let ourselves be vulnerable.
Somewhere deep down, the psyche has done the math: if I love only partly, a loss will hurt, but I’ll survive. If I love completely, a loss might take something from me that never comes back.
We think we’re protecting ourselves. But what we’re really doing is keeping ourselves from living.
Until something gives. At some point, the life we’ve built in the light of the day starts to feel unbearably hollow – safe, maybe, but not ours. And in that moment of implosion, we realize we have no choice left but to go in.
This is what Venus does now. She HAS to go into the underworld – because everything out there, in the light, has started to feel fake and disconnected. The roles, the masks, the rules we follow because they’re safe, not because they’re true.
The truth of her heart can no longer be found there. So she goes where it is.
Venus Square Pluto
And just as Venus accepts the inevitability of her descent and goes invisible, she squares Pluto – the quintessential underworld archetype.
Venus in the underworld, invisible, AND square Pluto? In pure astrological terms, that sounds like something to be doubly fearful of.
But this Venus-Pluto square is a blessing in disguise.
In the darkness of the underworld, meeting Pluto no longer feels frightening. It feels more like a homecoming.
Yes, it’s a square. Yes, it’s a square to Pluto. But it’s a square on Scorpio’s terms – Venus is in Scorpio – and on Pluto’s own territory.
Something fundamental that simply couldn’t be dealt with in the light of the day can now shift – naturally – in the depths.
Because that kind of shift cannot happen in our conscious awareness. It’s not some intellectual breakthrough, a puzzle to solve.
It happens in the fabric of who we are, where our deepest drives, patterns and wirings are built.
We know we’re there when it feels less like understanding and more like something giving way inside us – profound and cathartic, like an evolutionary relief.
Something that has kept an invisible grip on us, maybe for most of our lives, will let go. We will see it for what it is: a fear of the dark that has blinded us into not living.
In the darkness of the underworld, we surrender to the fabric of life – and in that surrender, life shows us the way. We find the things we thought we’d lost – because what we love doesn’t disappear into the dark. It’s held there.
The seed doesn’t grow in the light. It has to be buried first – in the dark, in the earth, where nothing seems to be happening.
The dark, the underworld, the silence, the earth – are not where life ends. They are the container of life, the fabric of existence itself.
Once embrace our greatest fear – the fear of the dark, – once we accept the uncertainty, the unknown, the inevitability of loss, what remains is pure life.
What is found is the antidote to empty rules and borrowed frameworks, to the masks we wear in the light of the day.
It’s the opposite of shallowness, of emptiness, of disconnection – of that nagging feeling that there’s something about life we haven’t quite figured out yet.
As Venus in Scorpio goes invisible and squares Pluto, let’s follow in her footsteps into the underworld. Let’s leave the light of the day behind for a while – and see what the dark is holding for us.
